A Classical Modern Kitchen & Family Space

The Requirement
A busy young family with small children who enjoy cooking, entertaining friends, and spending time together at home. They need a space that supports everyday family life while also feeling calm, warm, and design-led.
“We wanted a kitchen that truly felt like the heart of our home — somewhere we can cook, eat, work, and spend time together without feeling on top of each other. With young children, it had to be practical and hard-wearing, but we didn’t want to compromise on style. We love colour and warmth, so the deep green cabinetry and pink tiles give it personality while still feeling timeless. Storage was really important to us because family life comes with a lot of ‘stuff’, and we wanted everything to have its place so the space always feels calm and uncluttered. The big table is a must — it’s where we eat every day, the kids do homework and crafts, and where friends gather when we’re entertaining. We also wanted the layout to feel open and sociable so one of us can cook while still being part of what’s going on. Good lighting, durable surfaces, and easy-to-clean finishes were key for day-to-day life. Most of all, we wanted a space that feels warm, welcoming, and grown-up but still fun for our young family — somewhere we’ll make memories for years to come.”
Our Solution
This project involved the complete redesign and installation of a family kitchen to improve functionality, circulation, and visual cohesion within an open-plan kitchen–dining space. A key design challenge was the original position of the hob, which had been located directly beneath the window. This created practical and safety issues, restricted usable worktop space, and prevented the installation of an effective extraction system. Due to the sloping ceiling and limited ceiling void, a conventional overhead extractor was not feasible. To resolve this, the cooking zone was relocated to a new position within the main run of cabinetry, allowing for a more ergonomic layout, improved workflow, and increased uninterrupted preparation space. A venting induction hob with integrated extraction was specified. This eliminated the need for a ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted extractor while still providing efficient air recirculation and maintaining clear sightlines across the room — an important requirement for the clients’ family lifestyle. The revised layout also enabled: A full-height bank of tall cabinetry housing integrated appliances and pantry storage Continuous work surfaces for food preparation and baking Improved zoning between cooking and dining areas The installation included bespoke cabinetry in a deep green finish, German Laminate worktops, a tiled splashback, integrated appliances, and a new lighting scheme designed to work with the reduced ceiling height. The result is a highly functional, family-friendly kitchen that overcomes structural constraints through thoughtful space planning and carefully selected appliances, while delivering a warm, contemporary aesthetic.
